FREDERICK COUNTY HISTORY

Much of Frederick County was settled in the mid 1700s when the proprietor of the “Province of Maryland” offered 100 to 200 acres of free land to persons with families or willing to farm the land for 3 consequtive years.

Large grants of land were taken by English-speaking people from Maryland and the earliest settlers came from St. Mary’s, Charles and Prince George’s County. The first German settlement in Frederick County was approximately 1730. Growth was slow over the years until the 1990s when the prices of homes in Montgomery County increased to a price that was out of reach for many families.  That is still one of the reasons folks find good value in Frederick County.
